Micheline Louis Charles Awarded Honorary Degree SEIU Florida Healthcare Union Board Member, Micheline Louis Charles, was awarded an honorary degree from Miami Dade College at the end of April as she prepared to return to school to earn her GED and eventually her nursing degree at the age of 57. More. North Shore Medical Center Joins SEIU-FHU! In an overwhelming vote on Jan. 12, North Shore RNs and hospital employees voted to join Cedars, Pan American, Parkway and St. Mary’s hospitals and become the third Tenet hospital in South Florida to form a union with SEIU-FHU!
President Stern Joins Clergy, Community and Union Members at MLK Event in Miami Beach In the spirit of Dr.King, who advocated for civil rights and workers’ rights, hundreds of people gathered in the Miami Beach Community Church on Jan. 16 to prayerfully support condo workers employed by the Continental Group and other companies as they seek: • fair wages, • health care for their families, • dignity on the job and • freedom to join a union without threats or punishment. The event, which was sponsored by the South Florida Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice, closed with a march down Lincoln Road near a condo building where several workers had been fired for supporting the union.
SEIU-FHU Members Vote Unanimously for New Contracts This January, SEIU-FHU members brought in the New Year at Franco Nursing Home in Miami by unanymously ratifying their contract, which included wage increases from 3-13%! In December, SEIU-FHU members at Parkway Regional Medical Center in Miami also voted unanimoulsy for their first union contract. Congratulations!
